Class: Summer Baking Class Series

We are pleased as pie to announce our Summer Baking Class Series! One ticket signs you up for three classes this summer, building upon your newly developed skills with each session. Think of it like getting your Sister Pie degree!  

 

The series is offered in two sessions this summer: 

 

  • Series #1: Early Summer Series
    • Wednesday 6/24 from 6-8pm -- All-Butter Pie Dough
    • Wednesday 7/8 from 6-8pm -- Savory Hand Pies
    • Wednesday 7/22 from 6-8pm -- Seasonal Produce Celebration

 

  • Series #2: Late Summer Series
    • Wednesday 8/5 from 6-8pm -- All-Butter Pie Dough
    • Wednesday 8/19 from 6-8pm -- Savory Hand Pies
    • Wednesday 9/2 from 6-8pm -- Seasonal Produce Celebration

 

Class topics and lessons will include:

 

  • All-Butter Pie Dough
    • We'll focus on the most daunting elements of pie-making for home bakers: pie dough! Lessons include:
      • How to make Sister Pie's All-Butter Pie Dough by hand.
      • How to store and roll-out pie dough.
      • Creating the most dramatic crimps in town.
      • Blind Baking 101: how to prevent the dreaded soggy pie bottom.
      • A Q&A session to answer all of your pie dough related question.

 

  • Savory Hand Pies
    • In session 2, we will take the skills learned the first class to create one of our most popular baked goods: savory hand pies. Lessons include:
      • Making Sister Pie's All-Butter Hand Pie Dough (exact same recipe from session 1, but a little bigger)
      • How to roll-out hand pie dough.
      • Using in-season produce to create a balanced savory hand pie filling (filling made in the class is vegetarian and typically includes cheese).
      • How to assemble hand pies.
      • Lessons on kitchen improv, giving you the tips and tricks needed to make your own seasonal hand pie filling at home that can vary with the seasons.
      • Baking demonstration, instructions, and best-practices for savory hand pies.
      • A Q&A session to answer all of your hand pie related questions.

 

  • Seasonal Produce Celebration
    • In the final class of the series, you will take the skills learned a from the first two sessions to strengthen your skills in recipe and flavor development, as we teach you our tips, tricks, and techniques to make fresh, seasonal produce shine. Lessons include:
      • Using fresh, seasonal, Michigan produce to make a batch of scones from start to finish. (The scones you make will be frozen to take home and bake at your leisure.)
      • Using fresh, seasonal, Michigan produce to assemble a galette, using foundational knowledge learned in the first two classes.
      • Lessons on kitchen improv, giving you the tips and tricks needed to make fresh, seasonal produce shine
      • Baking demonstration, instructions, and best practices for scones and galettes.
      • A Q&A session to answer all of your baking questions. 

 

Following each class, you will leave with the items you made and a to-go treat bag. You will receive PDF copies of the recipes via email the following day.

    • To ensure a cohesive class experience, students should only register for the summer baking class series if they are able to make all three dates.
    • All summer series classes will be held from 6-8pm.
    • You will receive a reminder email one week in advance of the class with arrival logistics. We will provide the aprons, tools, and ingredients needed for the class.
    • All classes are held in-person at Sister Pie (8066 Kercheval, Detroit 48214).
    • Free street parking is available on both sides of Kercheval.
